Many autistic individuals have an impaired ability to detoxify which can lead to worsening symptoms. So it stands to reason, if we improve their detoxification systems we can improve the symptoms our children experience.
One key component of this process is liver detoxification, which occurs in two phases. We’ve learned that phase one of liver detoxification takes fat soluble toxins and converts them to water soluble toxins.
Phase two of liver detoxification moves these converted toxins out of our bodies. Just as phase one requires B vitamins, glutathione, and different flavonoids to work, phase two requires its own set of vitamins and nutrients including:
- Methionine
- Cysteine
- Magnesium
- Glutathione
- B5, B9 (folate), B12
- Vitamin C
- Glycine
- Taurine
- Glutamine
- Choline
If we’re missing these components it can result in a back up in our bodies which will lead to an overload of toxins. Additionally, regular bowel movements are an essential component of healthy liver detoxification. Without this piece, these toxins will be reabsorbed and redistributed by our bodies which can lead to more problems.
Liver detoxification is pretty simple: phase one converts toxins into a water soluble form and phase two pairs those toxins with other vitamins and nutrients to move them out of the body. The process is finished when our body eliminates these toxins through bowel movements.
When these three processes are in working order you may see a reduction in some of your autistic child’s troublesome symptoms and behaviors.
Be gentle with yourself. You’re doing a great job.
