Where Should You Buy Supplements for Your Autistic Child?

July 5, 2022 by Joya Van Der Laan

When looking for supplements for your autistic child, the options can be overwhelming. What’s the difference between supplements from Amazon, or a drug store, or Costco, or a specialty retailer? Today’s post is all about how to make sure we’re buying the best, most reliable supplements.

It’s important to know that the United States government does not regulate nutritional supplements (as opposed to medication, which is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration). This means that we as consumers need to be even more discerning. We need a trusted source for supplements.

When buying supplements, you’ll want to know

  • How the supplements are stored (was there temperature and humidity control?)
  • How the supplements will be shipped
  • Whether there was third-party testing to determine whether the supplements contain what the label says (and just as important, that they don’t contain any contaminants or other toxins)

All of the supplements I recommend to patients and use for my own family come from a company called Fullscript. While Fullscript does not make supplements for itself, it only stocks brands that have undergone third-party testing. Fullscript also uses warehouses that control for temperature and humidity, and ships supplements at the necessary temperature.

Fullscript ships anywhere within the United States. Unfortunately, it doesn’t ship to other countries. So if you’re outside the US, I recommend finding supplement brands on Fullscript and then searching for a source in your country that provides the same brands. Another approach would be to seek out supplement brands that comply with CGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practices) standards and/or are certified by NSF.

As promised in the video, here is a link to my Autism Essentials List in Fullscript.

Be gentle with yourself. You’re doing a great job.
